Custom Storm Windows and Storm Doors: What to Look For

Storm windows are one of the most misunderstood products in home improvement, mostly because they get confused with something else entirely.

A storm window is not a replacement window

A replacement window removes your existing window unit and puts a new one in the opening. A storm window adds a separate protective layer over the opening you already have, without tearing out what is there. They solve different problems and cost very different amounts.

All Weather Products builds custom storm windows and storm doors. We do not sell or install replacement windows. If a replacement window is what you need, you want a different kind of company, and it is worth being clear about that before anyone measures anything.

Custom-measured beats off-the-shelf

Every storm window we build is fabricated to the exact dimensions of your opening. Not close, not modified to fit, and not pulled off a shelf. We measure precisely, cut aluminum frames in-house, and assemble each unit to ensure a tight seal, clean lines and long-term durability.

This matters more than it sounds. A stock storm window that is a half-inch off gets shimmed, and the gap you shim is the gap that leaks air. The whole benefit of a storm window is the seal.

What a tight fit actually does

By adding an extra layer of insulation, storm windows and doors help reduce drafts and maintain consistent indoor temperatures. That improves comfort and lowers heating and cooling costs. They also take the direct hit from heavy rain, high winds, snow and temperature extremes so the primary window does not have to.

Our storm doors are not off-the-shelf inserts either. Each door is custom-measured and fabricated to match the opening, which gives you a tight square fit, smooth reliable operation, reinforced aluminum framing and a clean finished look. Because we manufacture them in Evansville, you can choose from a range of styles, colors and finishes to match your home.

What to ask any storm window company

• Do you fabricate the units or order them in? Ask who cuts the frame.

• Are they built to my measured opening, or to the nearest stock size?

• What is the frame material, and what is the warranty on the frame and on the finish?

• How is the unit sealed to the opening, and what maintenance does that seal need?

• Can I see storm windows you have installed on homes like mine?

All Weather Products has fabricated in Evansville, Indiana since 1979 and installs through experienced local professionals across the Tri-State: Southern Indiana, Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois. Our storm products are engineered for the weather patterns here, from heavy rain and humidity to winter cold snaps.

If you are outside that area, the questions above still apply. Look for a local fabricator who measures your openings and builds to them, rather than a national supplier shipping you the nearest stock size.
